Maintaining Muscle Mass

For NMES to maintain muscle mass it has to stimulate the motor nerves. These nerves are what are responsible for more muscle contractions ad therefore movement. During a session, this device stimulates an artificial muscle contraction.

Oedema Reduction/Fluid Dispersal

As a consequence of the artificial muscle contraction, NMES creates, it can be used to reduce oedema. Oedema is the build-up of fluid called lymph, which unlike blood does not have its own pump system. Some people refer to it as swelling or filling, but it does necessarily have heat in the area like when something is inflamed. The Lymph system relies on muscle contractions to move it around the body, because of not having its own pump.
